After a long season of spectacular performances, epic fails and an endless stream of oddball commentary from coach Blake Shelton, The Voice season 3 finale has arrived at last. The final three contestants have been chosen and tonight Terry McDermott, Cassadee Pope and Nicholas David will perform live for the voters one more time.

While many have already predicted Cassadee Pope from Team Blake Shelton as The Voice season 3 winner, fans of Nicholas David and Terry McDermott have not yet given up hope. Reality TV talent shows are packed with examples of how the ‘favorite to win’ isn’t always the one who takes home the crown.

What does seem clear is the strong odds for Blake Shelton to be a repeat team coach winner of The Voice 2012 season 3. Two of the three remaining finalists performing in The Voice finals this evening are on his team.

Nicholas David, on Team Cee Lo Green, is the odd man out in more ways than one. There is no denying he is an amazingly talented singer and musician. However, he lacks a contemporary edge and he doesn’t have the mainstream appeal of pop starlet type Cassadee Pope or rocker guy with a heart of gold Terry McDermott.

Then again, last season before The Voice finals, I would not have chosen Jermaine Paul would as The Voice winner. Yet another great example of how you can never really tell how the votes are going to go until the official results are announced.

Who will shine in their last night performing live on The Voice season 3? Will your favorite performer give the performance of a lifetime tonight? Join us for our live The Voice season 3 recap of the final performance show right now!

RECAP: To launch the show tonight, The Voice season 3 has chosen to take a few moments to pay homage to the victims of the Newtown school shooting. The coaches and contestants take to the stage for a performance of “Hallelujah” as they hold up cards with the names and ages of the slain victims. How you could watch this without crying your eyes out is beyond me. I know I can’t.

Tonight on The Voice 2012 season 3 finals, the final three contestants will be singing solo and in duets. They will also perform their most successful song of the season again. Let’s start the show!

Nicholas David (Team Cee Lo Green) – “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis and “Fire” by Jimmy Hendricks

Judges: Adam Levine thinks it was terrific to see a different side of Nicholas David with this performance tonight. He says he is very happy and it was entertaining and fun. Blake also thinks it was a fun performance and he is glad Nicholas went to that place with it. Cee Lo chimes in that sometimes they forget performing is supposed to be fun. He admires Nicholas’ humility and warms his heart, but it was his fire that burned down the building this evening!

My Take: I personally didn’t think it was his best performance and I thought the mashup didn’t quite work in places. There is no denying Nicholas is one talented man, but I don’t think this is the kind of show that is going to catapult him to a win. He needed something with a truly ‘wow’ moment and this wasn’t it.

Cassadee Pope – “Over You” by Miranda Lambert

Judges: Christina Aguilera, once again, can’t help but talk about what the performer LOOKS like first off. She thinks Cassadee is stunning and totally hot. Oh, yeah, and she also says Cassadee can sing anything and it’s a shame she is on Blake’s team. Adam thinks the coolest thing about Cassadee is how tuned and developed her voice is. He says she can be very proud. Blake says Cassadee knows how he feels about the song and about her performing it and he thought she was perfect. He says America has a heavy heart and this is a song of healing. She was amazing and it was a great moment.

My Take: Cassadee is being groomed for the win here. Seriously! The song choice was spot on and the mood of the performance was just right after the somber opening of the show tonight. She could forget the lyrics to every other song tonight and everyone is still going to be betting on her to win this thing.

Apparently The Voice producers and coaches just really enjoy surprising Terry McDermott with family members. First he was surprised with his wife and son on a previous show, then it was relatives from across the pond on another. During a visit by Terry and his family to Blake’s house, he gets another surprise when his Dad shows up. They haven’t seen each other in four years.

Terry McDermott & Blake Shelton – “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” by Aerosmith

My Take: The duet is fun, but kind of a bomb. They aren’t the best duet partners really and they fail to mesh properly on the tune. A winning performance this is not, but it is highly entertaining. How can you not enjoy the absurdity of these two doing Aerosmith together with Adam Levine shirtless wearing a wig on guitar? Priceless.

Nicholas David – “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers

Judges: Adam says he likes Nicholas’ outfit, which to me always has some deeper meaning, usually that the performance was not as spectacular as it could be. Still, Adam says he loves Nicholas and he did a great version of the song. Cee Lo says the two of them have spent a lot of time together and he is in awe of Nicholas. He really appreciates him and believes in him. Cee Lo says he doesn’t have anything fancy to add, but he truly and sincerely says I love you man. Awwwhhhh.

My Take: I thought the performance was beautiful and moving, especially since I’m still feeling the vibe of that nod to the victims of the Newtown shooting starting off the show tonight. This is the kind of music Nicholas was made to sing and his voice is golden. The only problem is, no matter how perfect he is on this kind of beautiful classic, I just think he doesn’t have enough modern appeal to win The Voice.

Terry McDermott – “Broken Wings” by Mr. Mister

Judges: Adam says he could tell there was something not right at the beginning, but Terry is such a great singer and he recovered well. That is why he is here. He thinks Terry nailed it. Blake says it is hard to do what Terry does up there every week and it always brings it every week. Nobody rocks it out like Terry does.

My Take: While it was sweet and a nice touch that Terry picked this song to sing because his little son loves it, that isn’t enough to make it a winner. I wanted very badly to love it, but it just did not work in places. When Terry has the right song, he is simply astonishingly good. When he doesn’t have quite the right song, it really makes him look far less talented than he actually is.

Now we get to see Cassadee and her family visit Blake’s house. Cassadee’s mom says Blake has given her daughter the confidence to be on the show. I would personally say all those years she spent touring, performing on stage and making records with her band probably gave her plenty of confidence, momma Pope. Or at least one would hope so.

Cassadee Pope & Blake Shelton – “Steve McQueen” by Cheryl Crow

My Take: This performance is a good bit of fun to lighten the mood of Cassadee’s earlier performance. This is not a show-stopping song that causes the audience to go silent with awe, but it does have everyone engaged and enjoying the hell out of it. This was a good duet choice for Cassadee and Blake.

Terry McDermott – “I Want to Know What Love Is” by Foreigner

Judges: The judges are heaping it on Terry with this one and it was his best performance of the night for certain.. Christina says Terry’s voice is incredible, but it takes dedicated effort as well to be on this show and his strong work ethic is really commendable. Blake says it was interesting Terry picked this song because it was so full of passion and he thinks it was even better the second time around. Blake says Terry drives him nuts because he just blows it away and he is honored to be his coach.

My Take: While this was a really great performance, it is a repeat song and we already knew he would sing the hell out of it. Terry failed to really deliver on any other performance tonight. I just don’t feel this one really well done song is going to snag him the win tomorrow.

We enjoy a brief moment of seeing how not weird Nicholas David’s parents are in another touchy-feely performer profile before the next duet. The irony of the song chosen for the duet between Nicholas David and Cee Lo Green should not be lost on anyone.

Nicholas David and Cee Lo Green – “Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry

My Take: Unfortunately the performance turns into the Cee Lo Green show and doesn’t let Nicholas really shine. I love the idea of the two of them doing this song, but Cee Lo just can’t let go of the spotlight and he overshadows  Nicholas throughout the whole thing. That’s a shame.

Cassadee Pope – “Cry” by Faith Hill

Judges: Adam says he wanted Cassadee on his team so badly and he has been very critical, but it doesn’t matter. She has accomplished everything he wanted her to. Blake says there is really nothing else he can say other than he has never heard her sing so well as she did tonight.

My Take: Why do I feel like the whole show tonight was just leading up to this closing performance from Cassadee Pope? She gets to be in the sweet ‘pimp spot’ going last tonight with her breakout song performance. I always say you can’t bet on the votes until they are counted, but this was pretty much slamming America in the face and yelling HERE IS YOUR WINNER PEOPLE. Sigh. She is really hot and she sings pretty, but I would still rather see either of the two guys win. Not going to happen, but it would be crazy fun if it did…
